You've probably heard the phrase "food as medicine" more and more lately...and for good reason! The American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) has spent the last two decades championing nutrition as a frontline treatment for chronic disease, training clinicians to use evidence-based approaches. Now that message is finally landing with health leaders, policymakers, and payers, all of whom are starting to recognize that fixing our nutrition is essential to changing the trajectory of chronic disease in the U.S.
But here's the catch: nutrition alone isn't the whole answer.
Nutrition Is One Piece of a Bigger Puzzle
Food as medicine is powerful, but it doesn't work in isolation. It's just one of six pillars that make up lifestyle medicine — and to get the best possible outcomes, it needs to work alongside the other five: physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, positive social connection, and avoiding risky substances.
The 6 Pillars
Everything we teach is grounded in ACLM's 6 Pillars of Human and Planetary Health, the foundation for preventing — and even reversing — chronic illness:
🍽️ Nutrition
🏃 Physical Activity
😴 Sleep
🧘 Stress Management
❤️ Emotional Connection
🌿 Avoidance of Toxic Substances
The Bottom Line
Real, lasting change doesn't come from optimizing one pillar and ignoring the rest. It comes from treating all six as part of the same system.
